Akihabara Itinerary: A 1-Day Otaku Route for Gamers & Anime Fans (2026)
Akihabara is Tokyo's otaku capital — arcades, anime figures, retro games, capsule toys and maid cafes packed into a few walkable blocks. This is a ready-made
1-day route that hits the highlights in a sensible order, with food, transit and tax-free tips.
Quick tips: Use the
Electric Town Exit at Akihabara Station. Most specialty shops open around
11:00; arcades run earlier and stay open to ~23:30. Carry ¥100 coins (some places are cash-only); many shops are
tax-free with your passport over ¥5,000. A
Tokyo Subway Ticket helps you get around. On Sundays, Chuo-dori turns into a
pedestrian paradise (1–6pm Apr–Sep / 1–5pm Oct–Mar).
- 11:00 — Figure & anime shops. Start at Akihabara Radio Kaikan, then Mandarake and amiami for figures and goods (tax-free with passport). → Figure shops guide
- 12:30 — Lunch. Akihabara is known for curry; ramen and conveyor-belt sushi are everywhere.
- 13:30 — Arcades. Crane games, rhythm and fighting games at GiGO, Taito Station, namco and Round1 — free entry, from ¥100 a play. → Arcade guide
- 15:00 — Retro game shops. Hunt vintage Famicom and Super Famicom carts at Super Potato, BEEP and Trader. → Retro game shops
- 16:30 — Gachapon halls. Rows of capsule-toy machines — bring a handful of ¥100 and ¥500 coins.
- 17:30 — Maid cafe. A fun, only-in-Japan break (entry + drink, ~¥1,500–3,500). → Maid cafe guide
- 19:00 — More arcades (open late), or drive a street go-kart through Akihabara in costume — a valid licence + International Driving Permit is required.
Akihabara curry is the local specialty; you'll also find ramen, conveyor-belt sushi, themed cafes and the maid cafes themselves. Most are a short walk from the Electric Town Exit.
- Don't get lost: take the Electric Town Exit (not the Central Exit).
- Paying: big chains take cards/IC/QR; small and used shops can be cash-only.
- Tax-free: bring your passport; spend ¥5,000+ at a participating store.
- Crowds: Sundays (pedestrian paradise) are liveliest; mornings are calmer.
Half a day still covers arcades + figures + a maid cafe. Pairing Akihabara with the rest of the city? See
